Team Australia suffered another massive setback on Day 5 of the ongoing third Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 against the Rohit Sharma-led Indian side. Middle-order batsman Travis Head suffered a groin injury and was out for even 10 minutes in India’s second innings.
Travis Head was the hero for Australia in the second Test as his side secured a 10-wicket win to level the series 1-1 in the five-match series. The left-hander continued his dominance in the third match. He scored his second consecutive century in the first innings of the third Test.
Travis Head suffers groin injury on day 5 of third Test in Brisbane
Australia have already lost Josh Hazlewood for the rest of the series and now Travis Head is dealing with a groin injury, which Brett Lee noticed while doing the commentary. The head injury is a big concern, especially since he couldn’t compete for more than 10 minutes, as Brad Haddin pointed out.
Latest update according to Cricket.com.au – “An Australian team spokesman insists it is wrong that Head has a groin injury.”
This is the last thing Australia want – Ravi Shastri
Travis Head showed signs of struggling with his groin while scrimmaging with Alex Carey, often clutching his groin and moving awkwardly. The head did not go away in India’s second match. Ravi Shastri described the situation as a “body blow” for Australia, with just a week until the Boxing Day Test.
“Worrying signs … he wasn’t moving freely,” Brett Lee told Fox Cricket.
“This whole series is on the line and that’s the last thing Australia want… let’s hope it’s a buzzer beater and seven days is enough,” Shastri said.
This is a bigger loss than Josh Hazlewood – Brad Haddin
The head injury adds to Australia’s woes after Josh Hazlewood was ruled out of the series with a calf injury. Brad Haddin said Head’s possible absence would be a bigger blow as he has been Australia’s best batsman in the ongoing series.
“It doesn’t look good… that’s a bigger loss than Josh Hazlewood, if Travis Head is out of this series (he’s huge), he’s been the one shining light with the bat. He’s very reluctant to stretch and that’s too bad signs for the Aussies,” Brad Haddin said.
The five game series is currently tied 1-1. India won the first Test by 295 runs, while Australia responded with a dominant 10-wicket win in the second. The third match ended in a draw as both teams decided to take time out due to adverse conditions.
The fourth Test match between India and Australia will be played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne, starting on Thursday, December 26. The winning team in the upcoming match cannot lose the series.
