Troy Aikman is tight-lipped about Cowboys HC job opening after Mike McCarthy leaves

Troy Aikman spoke about the Cowboys’ head coaching opening on Monday Night Football after the franchise opted to move on from Mike McCarthy, and his assessment was brutal. He suggested that there appears to be a lack of a coherent plan from Jerry Jones as they let the incumbent walk without interviewing other candidates. The Hall-of-Fame quarterback mentioned the likes of Kellen Moore, Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn, saying;

“It suggests there’s no real plan. The fact that they didn’t get a chance to interview a Ben Johnson and some others, Aaron Glenn. Kellen Moore is in the running, that makes sense to me. He’s a guy who’s familiar with the building, apparently he was working with the Cowboys, with Jerry Jones, and they know each other very well.”

Troy Aikman he was also critical of whether or not the Cowboys’ vacancy is coveted right now. He acknowledged the high-profile nature of the franchise, but said it might not be the most attractive opening for potential coaches. He explained this by saying that most candidates would like to do this job on their own terms and that is difficult to do in Dallas, commenting,

“As far as a coveted job, I don’t know that it’s accurate. I think the Cowboys are obviously a high-profile team and whoever’s the head coach of that team is definitely going to get a lot of attention, but I think most football players who take over as a head coach, they want to do it on their terms and that’s hard.”

Cowboys HOF Troy Aikman picks up on Dan Campbell to make his point after Mike McCarthy was fired

Troy Aikman further made his point by taking the example of Dan Campbell, who was so successful as a coach in Detroit. He said he may not be able to achieve the same results in Dallas, noting,

“If we take Dan Campbell, for example, he’s Dan Campbell (in Detroit) Dan Campbell if he’s with the Dallas Cowboys. It’s hard to imagine that he is. It’s hard to imagine that a lot of these coaches could be. My like the Dallas Cowboys I played there for 12 years, but to say it’s a coveted job I definitely agree with that.”

It was a damning indictment of the modern-day Cowboys from a man who did more than anyone to make the franchise great.
