Top Washington Post -Columnist leaves paper after 40 years in the midst of editorial commotion by owner Jeff Bezos


Top Washington Post -Columnist Ruth Marcus resigned and accused the newspaper Chief Executive and publisher Will Lewis of the killing of her column that the owner criticized Jeff Bezos’s Mandate to shift opinion columns to concentrate on libertarian sentiments.

In a letter obtained by NPRMarcus announced her resignation as a columnist and associated editor after working for four decades for the newspaper.

“The announcement of Jeff that the opinion section will now not publish an opinion that deviate from the pillars of individual freedoms and free markets threatens to break the trust of readers that columnists write what they believe, not what the owner considers acceptable,” Marcus wrote in the letter of resignation.

Marcus further explained that the freedom of columnists to write about all the topics they choose has been reduced.

“Will’s decision not to carry out the column that I am not respectfully deviating from Jeff’s Edict – something that I have not experienced in almost two decades of column writing – underlines that traditional freedom of columnists to select the subjects they want to tackle and say what they think they are dangerously eroded,” she wrote.

Marcus’s most recent column was entitled “Trump 2.0: the most harmful first two weeks in presidential history”, published on 4 February. She argued: “Trump’s second term is completely about limiting the power and reach of the government.”

According to NPR, a Washington Post spokesperson sent a statement about Marcus’s departure.

“We are grateful for Ruth’s important contributions to the Washington Post in the last 40 years,” said Marcus.

Bezos

Washington Post Staffers sent a letter to owner Jeff Bezos who encouraged him to tackle the terrible problems of the newspaper.

“We respect her decision to leave and wish her the best.” Added the message.

The post did not respond immediately Fox News Digital’s Request for comments.

Marcus’s departure came after the owner of Washington Post Bezos recently announced some important changes to the Outlet opinion page. Moreover, he said that the editor of the opinion section will resign if they introduce the changes.

“We are going to write every day to support and defend two pillars: personal freedoms and free markets. We will of course also deal with other topics, but points of view that are against those pillars will be left to be published by others,” “ Bezos wrote on Xannouncing the decision.
