Top Arizona election officer Mulling bid for important conference chair

Arizona Minister of Foreign Affairs Adrian Fontes, a Democrat, can run for Late Rep. Raúl Grijalvas seat in the congress After Grijalva died last week.

The decision can lead to a great stir in the politics of the state. It is a chair that had held Grijalva, a Democrat, since 2003 as his lung cancer-related death earlier this month at 77.

“I have long admired the Congressman Grijalva. We must all be grateful for his many years of service,” Fontes said in a statement Tuesday.

“I am considering a strong point to represent AZ-07, a place where I was born and raised, my country served in the Marine Corps and protected democracy. I will have more to say in the coming days.

“At the moment we have to remember and appreciate the life and legacy of the late congress member Grijalva.”

As part of the “dismissal” law of the state “, Fontes should leave its role, and Democratic government Katie Hobbs should name his replacement.

The next regular election for the State Secretary’s office is in 2026. When the Governor leaves the State, the State Secretary becomes the acting governor. When the governor comes down, the State Secretary increases to the governor.

This happened in particular when the former Democratic government Janet Napolitano resigned to serve as the Minister of Interior Security for the Obama government, which led to the republican Jan Brewer taking over. An office of the Lieutenant Gouverneur will be founded in 2027, making the Lieutenant Gouverneur the next in line for the Governor.

The move is a public pivot point of earlier reports that fonts considered a primary bid against Hobbs in the 2026 elections, which is expected to be one of the most competitive gubernatorial races in the country.

The daughter of Grijalva, Pima County Supervisor Adelita Grijalva, said she can also dive into the race, but wait until after the funeral of her father before announcing a decision.

The special primary elections for the seat will be July 15 and the general elections will be September 23. Grijalva won the November elections by more than 63% of the votes.
