During her seventh state of the state address, Whitmer Alarm sounded on Trump’s plan to impose 25% rates on Canada and Mexico, which fired the White House.

“Whitmer seems to run more for Governor of Canada in her strong defense of a deadly status quo in which more than a million Americans are slaughtered by Fentanyl’s Chinese poison that flows over our northern and southern borders,” said the White House Senior Counselor for Trade and Production Peter Navarro said in a statement by Fox News. “President Trump will stop that slaughter, even if he will stand up for the American car -industry, which will bloom again under the Trump rates.”

Trump’s tariff plans Would affect Michigan, given the shared border with Canada and Detroit’s leadership of the American car industry. This year, Whitmer has identified economic development and trade with Canada as important priorities for it.

Government Gretchen Whitmer, D-Mich, said that the 25% rates of President Donald Trump could harm Michigan’s car industry after Trump promised to save the automotive industry during his 2024 campaign.

“Industry leaders and top economic spirits on both sides of the aisle warn us about the destruction that 25% would set rates on the car industry of Michigan, while the daily costs for families are being increased,” Whitmer continued. “I am grateful that Republicans, Democrats and Leaders of the Private Sector speak out at widespread rates of 25% on our neighbors. Because we know that no to Canada would mean that they say yes to China.”

Trump confirmed on Thursday that his proposed rate plan of 25% would come into force next week, because “drugs are still flowing from Mexico and Canada in our country.” He said the rates will start on March 4 “until it stops or is seriously limited.”

“… The proposed rates that come in fourth place in fourth, indeed, will indeed come into effect, as planned. China will also be charged on that date an extra rate of 10%. The second mutual rate date of April will remain fully in force,” Trump said about Truth Social.

Earlier this month, Trump issued a 30-day break on his 25% tariff plan for Canada and Mexico after negotiations on border security and drug trafficking with the North American leaders.

“I am very happy with this first result, and the rates announced on Saturday will be paused for a period of 30 days to see if a definitive economic deal with Canada can or may not be structured,” Trump announced to Truth Social.

Whitmer said on Wednesday that she was grateful that the president had made a first break about the 25% rates for Mexico and Canada.

“As I said before, I am not at the rates. But they are a blunt tool when Michigan’s economy is at stake,” Whitmer added. “25% rates for everything would slow down the construction, close small companies, lead to dismissal in the car industry and Michigan families an extra $ 1,200 per year in the store and the pump costs, because companies will pass on their higher costs to the consumer. It would be a disaster.”

Whitmer said she asked Michiganders how they think about rates and received 3,000 written reactions in 48 hours from people who are concerned about the prices that rise.

“For them and every Michigander, let’s keep talking with one voice for smart trade policy to level the playing field and secure American jobs without purchasing the costs. About rates and each song, Michiganders expect us to work together in Lansing, because that’s how things are done.”

Trump promised Save the car industry During his inaugural speech, the Voortje built on an important campaign blade that was done during his Michigan meetings last year.

“With my actions today we will end the Green New Deal, and we will withdraw the mandate from the electric vehicle, save our car industry and keep my holy promise to our large American car -chers,” Trump said during his inaugural speech.

Trump explained his vision of American car factories at the Detroit Economic Club in October 2024.

“My goal is to see our automatic production even greater than in its Prime, and for Detroit and Michigan to be central to the action. For generations, this city has been the world capital of automotive production,” Trump said.

He was criticized by Michigan’s politicians for mentioning Detroit a “development area” during that speech.

“Our entire country will eventually be like Detroit if she is your president,” Trump said about former Vice President Kamala Harris.

“He has no idea what the hell he was talking about. And you know what I think? He should keep Detroit out of his mouth,” Whitmer shot back last year.

Trump argued during the same speech that his tarief agenda would put an end to foreign leaders who benefit from America’s car -industry.

“Detroit was decimated as by a foreign army,” he said. “This was a foreign army that invaded us, but it was an army of business people, very brilliant business people who took the candy out of our pockets, just as you took it from a baby. That was how easy it was for them. Factories were left in ruins.”

“When foreign leaders and CEOs call me to complain about our rates, my answer will be very simple: building in America, you have no rates. Build it here in Detroit, you have no rates. Build it in Dearborn or Lansing or Grand Rapids or Flint, you have not added taxes or something,”
