Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti said he understood the fans booing him and his team during the 5-2 Copa del Rey win over Celta Vigo.
Real were beaten 5-2 by rivals Barcelona last week and then threw away a two-goal lead against Celta – before rallying for an extra-time victory.
Some parts of the crowd made the feelings clear as two late goals – including a penalty from former Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso – took the tie beyond 90 minutes.
But Real responded with victory as teenager Edick scored twice in extra time to book a place in the quarter-finals.
“I see it as a wake-up call from the fans to the team and their manager. It’s a welcome wake-up call after what happened in the Barcelona game. Then the team reacted well,” Ancelotti said.
“The fans booed to wake us up and later because the team started to complicate a game we were on course to win 2-0.
“But then the fans started to push and when the Santiago Bernabeu pushes it’s something very special for us.
“It’s good that we played well in extra time and managed to win the game, so it was all good in the end.”
Ancelotti was not happy with the goals conceded by his team and urged his players to maintain concentration in the final minutes of games.
“The tension drops at the end. We made two mistakes and let our opponents back into the game, we left it open in a game that almost ended with two goals in front,” Ancelotti said.
“We conceded two late goals to our opponents when the game was almost over. First we made a bad mistake putting the ball in play and then the second goal was a result of poor defensive positioning. We played very well for over 70 minutes.
“Obviously this is something that cannot happen. We have to try to train more to avoid these kinds of mistakes and not to slow down at the end of the games.”
Real face Las Palmas in La Liga on Sunday afternoon.
