Suspect killed after driving truck into Texas mall


At least five people were injured and a suspect was killed after a man drove his pickup through the glass doors of a JC Penney in a mall in Texasthe police said.

The incident happened Saturday evening, just days before Christmas, at the Killeen Mall in Killeen, Texas, about 70 miles north of Austin.

During a press conference Saturday evening, Sgt. Bryan Washko said the truck drove “several hundred feet” through the entrance of the JC Penney store.

Shocked shoppers were injured when the driver “actively ran over people” and a fifth went to the hospital on their own, said Sergeant Washko. The injured ranged from 6 to 75 years old, he said.

The incident unfolded as the authorities noticed that the suspect, who has not been identified, was “driving erratically,” and that police attempted to stop him.

Instead of stopping, the driver got off the highway, drove into the Killeen Mall parking lot and rammed his car through the doors of the JC Penney, Sergeant Washko said.

The man driving the truck was fatally shot by police, authorities said.

“There were officers from DPS, Killeen Police and three other agencies engaged in gunfire to eliminate this threat to the community,” said Sergeant Washko.
