Little Master Sunil Gavaskar has extended his support to former India player Vinod Kambli. Kambli’s recent health has caused concern among cricketers and fans. Gavaskar is currently in Adelaide as part of the commentary panel for the Border Gavaskar series. He vowed to help Kambli get back on track. He referred to Kambli as “like my son”.

People have become more worried about Kambli’s health after seeing many videos online. Another video captures Kabli struggling to speak while singing a Bollywood tune. These scenes, along with footage from August showing him unable to walk, have painted a worrying picture of how he is doing now.

“The 1983 team is very aware of the younger players,” Gavaskar told Sports Today. “They are like grandchildren to me. If you look at their age, some are like sons. All of us are very worried, especially when their possessions leave them. I don’t like the word help.”

“What the ’83 team wants to do is look after him. We want to look after Vinod Kabli and help him get back on his feet. How we do, we’ll see in the future. We want to look after struggling cricketers when fortunes do not smile on them.”

Gavaskar stressed that the aim is to ensure that Kambli feels supported at a time when fortune has deserted him.

Kapil Dev offers help

Gavaskar’s comments echo sentiments shared by his teammate at the 1983 World Cup Kapil Dev. According to former Indian pacer Balwinder Singh Sandhu, Kapil has offered financial help to Kambli to undergo rehabilitation.

“Kapil (Dev, captain of the 1983 team) has clearly told me that if he wants to go to rehab, then we are willing to help him financially,” Sandhu said. “However, he has to go to rehab himself first. Only if he does, we are ready to foot the bill, no matter how long the treatment takes,” Sandhu added.

Kambli shares a historical connection with Sahin Tendulkarhis childhood friend and fellow protégé of Ahrekar. While Tendulkar’s career has reached unparalleled heights, Kambli’s struggles have often overshadowed his cricketing achievements.
