Southampton are on the hunt for a new manager following the sacking of Russell Martin

Southampton have parted ways with manager Russell Martin after their 5-0 defeat by Tottenham left the club nine points adrift of Premier League safety.

The 38-year-old successfully guided the Saints back to the Premier League last season, sealing promotion with a memorable play-off final win over Leeds at Wembley.

However, this campaign has been a stark contrast, with Southampton enduring a terrible run, losing 13 of their 16 league games so far.

The team’s only league win this season came against Everton in November, and they have struggled to find the back of the net, scoring just 11 goals – the lowest tally in the division.

In a statement, Southampton said: “Going into the start of the season, we all knew the challenges we would face this year as we adapted to life in the top flight, competing in the best and most competitive league in the world.

“However, the reality of our situation is clear. The board has been supportive of Russell and his staff and has been open and transparent about our expectations.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank Russell and his staff for all the hard work and dedication they have given to the club on and off the pitch over the past 18 months.

“Everyone associated with Southampton FC will always have fantastic memories of last season, especially winning the play-off final in May.”

Under-21 boss Simon Rusk has been named interim manager and will oversee the senior side starting with Wednesday’s Carabao Cup quarter-final with Premier League champions Liverpool.

Martin’s departure coincides with another managerial exit in the Premier League, as Wolves also announced the sacking of Gary O’Neill on the same day.

Southampton’s struggles in the top flight this season have highlighted the difficulties of adapting to life back in the Premier League and the club will now look for a new direction to reignite their survival hopes.
