Floyd Schofield posted on social media that he received the contract and that it is a “done deal” to fight Shakur Stevenson next.
We are still waiting for Turki Alalshikh, Matchroom and Golden Boy to confirm that Shakur vs. Schofield has been signed for February 22nd. Shakur (22-0, 10 KOs) revealed Saturday that he had signed off on the contact. Today, he posted the cryptic message, “Baby food,” apparently referring to the 22-year-old Schofield.
Shakur’s Call
2016 Olympic silver medalist Shakur looks happy because this is his baby, the guy he wanted. For obvious reasons, Stevenson showed no interest in fighting Andy Cruz or giving Edwin De Los Santos a rematch. He knows his limitations. Barring Shakur’s injury, Schofield is a safe pick with no real chance of winning.
Some fans were hoping His Excellency Turki would veto the idea of Shakur defending against rookie Schofield and insist Stevenson fight Andy Cruz or Raymond Muratalla. This would prevent this abomination from happening.
The fans are not happy
If the Stevenson vs. Schofield match is announced, it could end badly for Kid Austin, leaving him, Oscar De La Hoya, Shakur and the fans looking like fools. I say fans because many of them will talk about the Shakur-Kid Austin fight thinking it will be competitive and be unhappy when it isn’t.
Schofield and his father, Floyd Sr., are leading the charge, pushing hard for the Shakur match. They sound so confident of victory despite young Kid Austin’s complete lack of experience. He looked terrible in his last fight against second division fighter Rene Tellez Giron on November 2nd. Fans believe that Scofields is thirsty. They know payday will be good.
People wouldn’t mind Schofield fighting Newark, New Jersey native Shakur for his WBC 135-pound title if he at least proved himself against some contenders, which he didn’t.
Would it be asking too much for Kid Austin to have won two or three of these talents?

“I know I’m going to be able to beat Shakur and I’ve seen Floyd fight a little bit and he’s a little bit of an aggressive fighter,” Jamaine Ortiz said. Fighthypetalking about his belief that Floyd Schofield will beat Shakur Stevenson.
“I’ve seen him get down in his last fight and he was able to get back up and finish it,” Jamaine said of Schofield’s last fight against Rene Tellez Giron on Nov. 2. “If he wrestles hard and puts pressure on Shakur, I think he can do really well and win the fight. I think Floyd can take him.”
