When it comes to anchoring a morning newscast, one thing’s for sure — your wake-up call is long before the sun comes up.
And as a result Savannah Guthrie has a stern warning about his new Today coach Craig Melvin.
Before you join Today six years ago he it was the evening news anchor for WIS in Columbia, South Carolina, and weekend anchor for WRC in Washington, DC in 2008, where he met his wife, a sports reporter Lindsey Czarniak.
Husband and wife share a mutually exclusive love of sports.
As a result, Melvin admitted that he stayed up last night to watch the College National Championship instead of going to bed in preparation for his 3:45 a.m. talk time.
Guthrie was quick to scold Melvin for his choice.

“I was up late last night,” Melvin told Guthrie on Tuesday, Jan. 21, revealing that he “had to see if the Ohio State Buckeyes could beat their opponents” the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, which they did 34-23.
“Again? You know it’s a marathon, not a sprint. “If you’re staying up every night watching football and getting up early, it can’t last,” warned Guthrie Melvin.
Melvin agreed with his coach, admitting that “I’m going to have to upgrade.”
Melvin anchors the first hour of Today show from January 13. However, he has been a staple of the show’s third hour for the past few years.

In an interview with ParadeMelvin remembered how he had learned about Hoda Kotbhis decision to step down from the anchor desk to spend more time with his daughters and mother.
“My dressing room is two blocks away from hers and she knocked on my door one morning, which was unusual. And she said, “Do you have a moment?” She came in and said, “I just wanted to tell you something. I’m leaving.
Acknowledging that “nobody leaves these jobs alone,” he said he first asked if Kotb was “sick.” When she assured him that she was fine and just wanted out of her post while she was “on top,” Melvin pushed harder.
“I thought, ‘Are you being forcibly evicted?'” She says, “No, Craig, I’m fine. i’m leaving I was really stunned, so much so that after she left, I went back to her dressing room and was like, “Are you sure you’re okay?” It takes a certain kind of courage to leave anything when you’re on top on your game.”
