Ryan Routh, the man accused of committing murder then-presidential candidate Donald Trump at a Florida golf course in September, faces a new charge of attempted murder in connection with a car crash that happened as he tried to flee authorities, Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody announced Wednesday.
Moody said that when Routh fled north on I-95, police were forced to shut down traffic in both directions to arrest him and protect the public. However, the lane closure resulted in a traffic accident that injured a 6-year-old girl traveling with her family.
The new charges against Rou comes after what she described as a “lack of cooperation and support from federal agents” that has frustrated authorities in Florida.
“We immediately reached out and began communicating with our federal partners,” she said. “As soon as we began these overtures, we were immediately confronted with a lack of willingness to grant us access to the crime scene, an unwillingness to provide collected evidence, an unwillingness to allow us to supervise witness interviews, and the list goes on. on and on.”

Routh allegedly lurked with a gun for more than 12 hours on the edge of the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach while Trump was golfing on September 15. A Secret Service agent saw Routh point a gun through a fence and shoot at him. Routh fled and was arrested that day.
Routh has already done that pleaded not guilty to five charges, including the attempted murder of a presidential candidate and the assault of a federal officer.

Routh last appeared for a hearing in federal court on December 11. His legal team is considering an insanity defense.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis echoed Moody’s comments, claiming that it has been difficult to work with federal officials on the matter.

“The FBI has stonewalled Florida’s investigation into the Trump assassination attempt time and time again, and I appreciate AG Ashley Moody and her team for pressing ahead despite this resistance,” he said. posted on X. “The tide will turn on January 20th and we fully expect the federal roadblocks to be lifted. The potential murderer must face the full force of justice and the people deserve the truth about the defendant’s history, motivations and plans.”

Rou remains in federal custody. His trial is currently scheduled for February 10, 2025.
