Ruben Amorim says Manchester United will give Luke Shaw as much time as he needs to recover from his latest injury.
The left-back was a surprise inclusion in England’s Euro 2024 squad and made three appearances in the tournament’s knockout stages, starting the final as the Three Lions were beaten by Spain.
Shaw then struggled with knee and calf problems at the start of the 2024/25 season but was fit to feature in Amorim’s first three games as manager following the sacking of Erik ten Hag. However, the 29-year-old has since suffered a setback and lost Wednesday’s 2-0 defeat by Arsenal.
Speaking after Shaw was ruled out of the trip to the Emirates Stadium, Amorim said: “What I can say since I arrived, I see him in the medical department working a lot in the gym, working a lot on the pitch, we control the load in the games , in training, he was losing weight, so he did everything.
“If he continues to do this behavior, he’s a top, top player and we need him. However long it takes, I’ll be with him, we’ll help him come back, not only Manchester United but your national team needs a guy like Luke Shawso we’re here to help him.”
As reported by BBC SportShaw has had 75 different spells of absence forcing him to miss games since making his professional debut for Southampton aged 16.
Shaw’s injury problems over the past year or so have been exacerbated by the absence of non-scholar Tyrell Malacia, who did not play at all last season after a promising debut in 2022/23. However, the Dutchman is fit again and started the recent clashes with Bodo/Glimt and Arsenal, coming on as a half-time substitute in both games.
Amorim has too given his verdict on the return of teenage defender Leny Yorowho made his United bow on Wednesday as a substitute after picking up an injury in pre-season.
