Emma McIntyre/Getty Images for ELLEpregnant Yellow jackets star Samantha Hanratty is preparing to have her first child, a boy cleft lip surgery shortly after he was born.
“My baby will be born with a cleft lip. We’re not 100 percent sure and we probably won’t know 100 percent until he’s born if he has a palate,” Hanratty, 29, said on Friday, Dec. 13. TikTok video for Babylist. “His goes all the way to the nose.”
Hanratty and her husband, Christian DeAndaannounced in August that expecting a baby. The couple later found out that the fetus had a cleft lip. According to the Mayo Clinic, cleft lip occurs when the upper lip is not fully formed before birth.
Hanratty and DeAnda’s son will have to undergo a series of procedures to correct the birth defect.

“At three weeks, he’s going to have his first surgery where he’s going to be locked up,” Hanratty told Babylist. “One thing we’re really mindful of is our language around it. Nothing is fixed, there is nothing wrong with that. It’s just open right now and he’s going to have a really big smile and we’re going to close and it’s going to be a little bit of a smaller smile.”
Hanratty also acknowledged the potential “difficulties” that could arise from her baby’s cleft lip and subsequent surgery.
“Probably will not be able to breastfeed“, she explained. “We’ll have special bottles for it and then there’s a lot more surgery to come depending on the severity of where it’s in the palate, if it’s in the palate.”
Hanratty further noted that “there are definitely moments where (she) definitely” feels sad, but overall she is “really happy to be his mom.”

“One time my husband and I were crying about it in bed and (he) went to lay on my stomach and he kicked my husband so hard,” Hanratty recalled. “(Christian) was like, ‘Okay, dude. It’s okay, I understand. You’ll be fine. So he lets us know that there is nothing to worry about.

Hanratty first confirmed in September TikTok video that her son will be born with a cleft lip.
“The news was obviously shocking at first because it’s not in my family, it’s not in my husband’s family,” Hanratty said at the time. “The biggest thing we all want is for our children to be happy and healthy. … I think both my husband and I are at peace with the fact that we know he’s going to be OK.”
