Postecoglou defends Tottenham players after tough draw at Fulham

Ange Postecoglou has defended his team after Tottenham’s impressive display in their 1-1 draw against Fulham.

Spurs aimed to stay close to London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea in the Premier League but were unable to take advantage of the Cottagers.

Brennan Johnson volleyed home from Timo Werner’s assist to score his 10th goal of the season and help a Spurs side missing Dominic Solanke through illness.

Fulham did, however, equalize when substitute Tom Cearney teed up Fraser Forster in the 67th minute, although Cearney was later sent off following a VAR review for a dangerous tackle on Kulusevski.

This result leaves Tottenham in seventh place, just a week after their impressive 4-0 win over Manchester City.

Despite the setback, Postecoglou stressed the need to shield his players amid mounting injury and availability problems.

“We will have to protect our players because as I said, we are within our numbers and Deci played every minute. I have rarely let him down,” Postecoglou said.

“Well we just have to be careful with him and a few others but at the moment we don’t have too many options so we just have to try to manage them as best we can and obviously that affects the performance.

“It’s very easy to say, let’s play like we did against Man City every game.

“And somehow again it seems with this club that whatever we do well is then used as a millstone to bring us down at every other opportunity.

“I guess from my perspective, as I say all the time, it’s very important not to react to any of this and stay focused.

“I just feel sometimes that, especially the players we’ve got at the moment, they’re working really hard to try and get this football club to where we want to be.

“We’re in good shape, we’re still in good shape. We are still in a good position in the league.

“We’re still in the Carabao Cup, we’re in a decent position in Europe, so it’s about keeping our focus on continuing to progress.”
