Patrick Mahomes limped off the field with an ankle injury during the Kansas City Chiefs’ game against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, December 15.

The Chiefs quarterback, 28, suffered an ankle injury in the fourth quarter of the game when he was substituted Carson Wentz. Mahomes was listed as questionable to return by the Chiefs. While Mahomes limped off the field, he was later spotted riding in the back of a cart, NFL footage.

“I was trying to make a play,” Mahomes said, according to NFL. “As I threw the ball I got hit and I didn’t see it, I felt like someone hit me from behind too so I kind of rolled over. That’s what happens in football. Try to tie yourself back up, but obviously it hurts a bit. Now we will continue with the rehabilitation part and try to be ready for next week.

Mahomes did not return to the game, but watched from the sidelines as the Chiefs beat the Browns 21-7.

“Patrick, his right ankle is hurt. It’s not broken, but it’s hurt,” the Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said of the defender’s ankle in an interview with reporters after the game, per social media. “He’ll start the rehab part as we go, and then we’ll just have to see how he does.”

“It’s not broken, I can tell you that,” Reed continued. “It’s literally going to be day-to-day as we go forward. I don’t know how much swelling there is or anything.

“It hurts,” Reed continued told reporters. “It will literally be day by day. He could probably go back inside. He wanted to go back inside. There was no need for that.

Postgame footage showed Mahomes leaving the locker room and being put on the back of a gurney headed for further evaluation of his ankles — he was not wearing a brace or tape on the injured limb.

“Usually the next day you feel good about it,” Mahomes said of his injury. “I feel I could have finished the game under different circumstances. But I thought it was a smart decision to let Carson go. He has played a lot of football and finished the game well.”

It is currently unclear whether Mahomes will be ready to play with the Chiefs for their final two games of the year. The NFL team is scheduled to play the Houston Texans on Saturday, December 21st and the Pittsburgh Steelers on Wednesday, December 25th.

Mahomes’ injury comes after he was fined nearly $15,000 for making a “violent gesture” during the Chiefs’ Nov. 17 game against the Buffalo Bills, which they lost 30-21. In the fourth quarter, Mahomes was caught on CBS cameras pantomiming the use of a shotgun after a big play. The NFL deemed this a fine for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Patrick Mahomes was proud of how the Kansas City Chiefs played over the weekend, but knows they still have to do it to reach Super Bowl LVIII. “Hey, real quick, real quick,” Mahomes, 28, said in an NFL clip while in the team’s locker room after the team’s Sunday, Jan. 21, (…)

Despite recent events, Mahomes has already stated that the fourth quarter of a football game should be “a little more relaxed” than the rest of the game.

“You want to have some shots,” Mahomes told reporters after the Chiefs’ 30-27 win over the Carolina Panthers on Nov. 24. “You want to be a little more relaxed in the fourth quarter. I’ve always said it can be a good thing when you get to the playoffs and later in the season, just knowing you’ve been in those moments before and you know how to attack it.”
