New York Government Kathy Hochul Announced on Tuesday preparations to use the New York National Guard to protect correction officers currently working, prisoners and the communities around the correction facilities.
The move comes after prisoners took over three dorms and attacked three guards in Collins Correctional Facility Erie Countyin the midst of reports of staff shortages.
In the past year, dozens of guards in the facility were injured by prisoners, Fox News Digital reported earlier.

The governor also directed Department Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) Commissioner Daniel Martuscello and High Administration Officials to meet leaders of the New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association (Nyscopba) to ‘ask’ to put an end to the illegal work interruption about that significant concern about Public safety causes New York, “according to a statement.
“The illegal and illegal actions taken by a number of correction officers must end immediately,” wrote Gov. Hochul in the statement. “We will not allow these people to jeopardize the safety of their colleagues, locked up people and the inhabitants of communities around our correction facilities.”

New York National guard Members will be deployed on Wednesday in DOCCS facilities if the illegal work stop does not end and according to the statement the correct disciplinary measures will take “if necessary”.
Hochul counsel will collaborate with the office of the attorney general on legal mechanisms, such as the Taylor Law, who force employees to return to work.
“This illegal work promotion involving Nyscopba members causes irreparable damage to the activities of the department and endangers the safety and security of their colleagues within these facilities,” wrote Martuscello. “We will continue to develop strategies to reduce attacks and bring more staff on board.”
He added that there is always room for progress and for disagreement with The UnionBut he urges everyone to end the measure.

In March 2024, the trade union agreed to a collective negotiating agreement with the state of New York to improve working conditions for correction officers.
Some of the benefits were included: increased salaries and starting wage for new employees with $ 6,500, increased location-based correction officer-based wages with $ 500 to $ 1,000 per officer for Downstate assignments, increased correction officer Hazardous Duty Pay from $ 200 to $, and and and 12 weeks with 12 weeks of fully paid parental leave.
Laws and administrative changes have been made to protect correction officers and the recruitment efforts have been extended.
