Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson have been divorced for almost twenty years. They have both remarried and each have three children of their own.
In the newly released season of Netflix’s “The ultimatum: get married or move on,” Nick, who hosts the show with his second wife, Vanessa Lachey née Minnillo, made a rare comment about his divorce from Simpson while trying to empathize with a cast member, admitting he has “scars” from the split .
The show follows multiple couples – all divided over the security of marriage – as they explore an alternative relationship in an attempt to determine whether to make that commitment or move on.

‘I was too married before. Separated. So I understand the pain and the scars that come from that,” Nick told the cast at a dinner table while sitting next to Vanessa.
He and Simpson, who co-starred on the reality show “Newlyweds,” officially divorced in 2006 after initially splitting last year. The couple met through their mutual manager in 1998 and reportedly had an on-again, off-again relationship before getting married in October 2002.

Shortly after their divorce, Nick released a sharp ballad called “What’s left of me‘, referring to his failed marriage. Then-model Minnillo starred in the music video for the song, and the pair soon began dating. But their relationship didn’t accelerate like his with Simpson.

“You may have heard: I gave Nick an ultimatum. We were in a relationship for five years,” Vanessa told the cast. “And so I talked about the fact that I gave an ultimatum. But what I’ve never talked about is what I actually did.”
“I kept pointing the finger and I took that finger and turned it towards myself. And then I had to say, ‘What am I not giving him?’ I don’t give him the respect I ask for. I don’t give him the communication I want. There’s an age difference and I still went out, you know, partying with my girls,” she admitted. “And I tell him that I want to be a mother. He says, ‘Cool. Okay. So I’ll see you at 2:30 when you get home?’ We are both Scorpios. We are stubborn and we didn’t get anywhere.’
Nick continued the conversation and said that their relationship was definitely not perfect.

“I want to encourage all of you: Don’t let your past define your future,” Nick told the group. “What I really always wanted in my life was a beautiful marriage and a beautiful family. If I hadn’t believed in that, I would never have realized the beautiful life I have with this woman. And we sit here, We don’t realize it.”
“But when you love each other, you believe in each other and you are on the same page.”

The show’s release and Nick’s commentary come as Simpson and her former NFL tight end husband Eric Johnsonare currently facing rumors of a breakup. Fans speculated that Simpson and Johnson, who married in 2014, were on the rocks when the singer posted a cryptic Instagram discussing new music in November.
“Interviews in my music room in Nashville, where I discovered my unique magic. This comeback is personal, it’s an apology to myself for putting up with everything I didn’t deserve,” she wrote.
