Outgoing Sen. Mitt RomneyR-Utah, R-Utah, said he thinks newly elected Vice President J.D. Vance will become the Republican Party’s 2028 presidential candidate, describing Vance as “smart” and “articulate.”
President-elect Donald Trump enlisted Vance to serve as his running mate for the 2024 presidential election, and the two defeated the Democratic ticket consisting of Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
Romney, commenting on CNN’s “State of the Union,” said the Republican Party “has become the party of the working-class and middle-class voter,” adding that Trump should get the credit.

The senator suggested that moves to defund police and allow biological males in women’s sports have led to a middle-class flight from the Democratic Party, which he said is “in trouble.”
“I don’t know how they recover,” he said. “They have lost their base,” he said, noting that union workers have left the Democratic Party and voted for the Republican Party. “And the Democratic Party is not seen as rich people, but as college professors and woke scolds,” he said.
During an interview with Romney, CNN’s Jake Tapper said, “Trump has made it clear that he wants to go after his political opponents,” and asked Romney if he was concerned that he or his family could be targeted “for retaliation.”

Romney indicated he is not concerned and that he thinks Trump will likely “focus on the future.”
Romney had been a senator since 2019, but chose not to seek another term.
He was previously the presidential candidate of the Republican party in 2012, but lost that election to the incumbent Democratic party. President Barack Obama.
Romney also previously served as governor of Massachusetts.

When Tapper asked Romney how he would like to be remembered in history, the senator said he “doesn’t think history will remember Mitt Romney.”
“What I want is for my family to remember me,” he noted.
