“The shift in how Democrats position themselves about issues related to trans -rights is disturbing,” says Equality Michigan executive director in Knott on Thursday. “It is time to act decisively to take a fixed position and to make it clear that we will fight to protect the LGBTQ+ community, whatever happens, and unfortunately we do not see the same power that we even did last year.”

“We all want sports to be honest and student athletes are safe,” Knott added. “That is why the MHSAA already has rules about who can participate in different sports at different levels in different issues. They already have a process and are experts when it comes to schools. They do not need politicians in Lansing to ignore their expertise with a one-size-alalle-alall blanket ban.”

Jerron Totten added, who runs the party LGBT & Allies Caucus“There are so many other issues that are more urgent, more alarming than Trans -children who exercise. And I think we, as voters, are looking for legislators who will tackle those problems and not a scapegotry communities.”

“The Democratic party chose in a different way than what we would normally think they would do,” said Jeffrey Pienela, the president of Muskegon Pride, an LGBTQ+ interest group.

“It’s surprising. It’s almost like, who has your back if neither of them does?”

A Democrat, Rep. Emily Denvendorf, said why she had voted For the resolution.

‘I want you to think about what it means to be a child. Find out who you are trying to find a place to belong. Learning trust through the support of your colleagues and mentors … Imagine now, instead of being told by adults by your own government that you are the problem. Making exercise, making friends and being friends is yourself wrong. That the community meant to support you, instead is determined to eliminate you.

“I know what it’s like to be a strange child, and it’s lonely. I know what it’s like to be our non -binary legislator, and it is insulating and dehumanious. This resolution is not about honesty. It’s not about protecting the sport of women. This is not about safety because there is no threat.

Rep. Alabas Farhat, a Democrat who went into the mood against the majority of her party,, however, offered an alternative.

‘We want to ensure that there is an honest environment … to compete with. And I will just be honest, that’s where it comes from for me. People in my district, I certainly think, agree with that sentiment …. ‘Rep. Alabas Farhat said. “I prefer that we prioritize affordability conversations, around housing. I prefer that those conversations are paramount instead of resolutions like this. But you know, again, for me it is a matter of honesty and my district has very strong opinions about things like this.”
