Mason Mount out ‘for weeks’

Manchester United will again be without midfielder Mason Mount for “several weeks”, with new manager Ruben Amorim vowing to help the Englishman recover.

Mount limped off after 14 minutes of United’s 2-1 win at rivals Manchester City last weekend and sat out Thursday’s defeat away to Tottenham in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

The former Chelsea man missed four months of last season with a calf injury and has featured just 12 times this season due to multiple setbacks.

Asked how long Mount would be out for before Sunday’s visit to Bournemouth, Amorim said: “Many weeks.

“I don’t know the exact date, but he will be out for a long time. In that sense, it is part of football and we continue.

“What I can do is help Mase, teach him how to play our game when he recovers. Try to use that time to think about different things and then I think the worst part is that we don’t have time to train like we should when you’re recovering from a lot of injuries.

“We always travel, we have games, so in training we don’t have the whole team together and it’s very difficult to recreate the game before they come into the game. It is very difficult for the player to be out for so long and he is trying very hard.”

Luke Shaw will also be unavailable for Bournemouth, but Marcus Rashford is in contention.

Amorim again left Rashford out of the squad for the midweek game against Tottenham, which was purely “by choice”, but it came 48 hours after the United academy product said he was “ready for a new challenge”.

Asked if that omission, since Rashford was also absent from the win at Manchester City, was due to disciplinary reasons, Amorim said: “No, it’s the same thing guys, the same thing. Exactly the same thing.”

Asked if Rashford could face Bournemouth, Amorim said: “Yes, of course.”
