Mason Greenwood’s England career officially ended, with Marseille striker changing his obedience to Jamaica.
Greenwood only won one ceiling of England, which came in September 2020 in a UEFA Nations League game against Iceland.
However, his arrest of suspicion of attempted rape, the attack that caused actual bodily harm and control and forced behavior in January 2022 effectively ended his hopes for the choice of England, while bringing his career to Manchester United.
Greenwood borrowed Laliga Getafe in 2023 before entering Marseille last July.
He has been in sparkling form for Marseilles, scoring 15 goals in 24 Ligue 1 matches but there is no chance of recall for the three lions when Thomas Tuchel He names his first team Next Friday, with Jamaica now focusing internationally.
Greenwood is from Jamaican descent and reportedly began the process of changing obedience last August. Asked about Greenwood, the CEO of the Football Association Mark Bullingham confirmed that Greenwood had officially applied to make the move to play for Jamaica, making it not eligible to appear again for England.
Speaking during the revelation of FA’s strategy for 2024 to 2028, Bullingham said of Greenwood: “So my understanding and I should have controlled to control my understanding, is asked to change. This happened typically, so it wouldn’t be able to play for England) because you can only change.”
Bullingham added that Greenwood had never said he had no future with England.
“I know that people asked Gareth (Southgate) for him and Gareth was in the face of not thinking because he hadn’t appeared at this level, so I don’t know any communication we had with him,” Bullingham explained.
“I don’t think there was a request or something. It just wasn’t one, so it’s a personal decision by him.”
The upcoming international window will see Jamaica treat Saint Vincent and Grenadines in a two -legged draw as part of the Concacaf Gold Cup qualifiers.
