Charles Sykes/BravoThe Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star Mary Cosby says her son Robert Jr is doing well after a stint in a substance abuse rehab facility.
“He went to rehab. One month left. He finished it. He did an excellent job. He came out a new person,” Mary, 52, said during her Wednesday, Dec. 4, appearance on the Bravo show. Watch What Happens Live.
She confirmed that Robert Jr.’s wife, Alexiana Cosby“also went to rehab. And you know what? She’s still there.
Mary said WWHL host Andy Cohen that Robert Jr., 21, “is doing so well. I’m so proud of him. I’m so proud of him.”
While Real hosts is known for its laugh-out-loud levity and over-the-top drama, Mary and her son shared really serious moment together on the Nov. 27 episode of the Salt Lake City franchise. Robert Jr., whom she shares with her husband Robert Cosby, has been open about her substance abuse and mental health issues, explaining that she sometimes feels like “life is just chicken without seasoning.”
“When I get drunk, it’s like adding spice,” he said as Mary listened through tears.
Robert Jr. said he was introduced to Xanax at a party, then “started buying it. Then I started taking Xanax with Acid and then Molly with Xanax. I really like Xanax so I mix it with everything. Xanax and cocaine.
Robert Jr. continued, “You know the regular 30mg Oxys? I noticed… this was a turning point for me. I took 10 at a time and didn’t even feel it.”
Mary began to cry, telling her son that she would never “judge” him.
“I can try to help you, but you have to help yourself because I’m not going to support him,” she told him on camera. “Do you accept that you have a problem?”
Robert Jr. also told Mary that he “wanted to die” at one point in his life and Mary was the “only reason” he didn’t kill himself.
“I just felt like a stain,” he said. “I just felt like this world wasn’t for me.”
The moment struck a chord with Bravo fans, including the actress Bridget Everettwho appeared as a WWHL guest with Mary on Wednesday.
“I just felt like everything he said was the right thing to say to him,” Everett, 52, told Mary. “He couldn’t have dreamed of better support.”
Cosby told Cohen and Everett, 56, that her conversation with Robert Jr. “wasn’t planned. … We just got together, Robert and I, and I was like, ‘We’re going to do this because we’re going to help somebody.’
“He didn’t plan what he was going to say and I didn’t. And I just said what I felt,” she added, crying as Cohen held her hand.
Days before that RHOSLC aired episode, Mary offered an update of Robert Jr. while chatting with Us Weekly extremely.
“He’s stable, which I think is good,” she shared. “This is a heavy subject. But for me, because it all came to me at once and I didn’t expect it, but I take it day by day.
