Martin Zubimenti explains Liverpool’s transfer abstinence

Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimenti has revealed that “selfish” reasons led to his decision to turn down Liverpool. transport approach last summer.

The Euro 2024 winner was in high demand after the triumph of Spain. After an impressive season at the heart of La Real’s midfield in La Liga and the Champions League, Zubimendi has been identified as Liverpool’s top transfer target to belatedly fill the void left by Fabinho’s departure.

Despite extensive pursuit from Arne Slot, the 25-year-old chose to stay at his boyhood club, a decision he made to ensure he became a better footballer in the long term.

“I went on holiday and it took me by surprise,” Zubimendi said of Liverpool’s interest in an interview with The Basque Journal. “It wasn’t something I had planned. I reacted when the situation arose. It was an uncomfortable moment for me. But I weighed the pros and cons and came to the conclusion that the best option was to stay.”

Zubimendi added: “I looked at my personal development, who I am, and the work of the club. I stayed because I knew this season would be important for me in the team and I still had steps to take. It was not that difficult of a decision.

“There were many reasons for my decision, but I was selfish and thought about what was best for me. And that was to stay.”

Ryan Gravenberch has thrived Liverpool this season in the defensive midfield role that Zubimendi would have, but the Reds are still interested in a second string to the Spaniard. Arsenal and Manchester City are also monitoring Zubimendi, with the Premier League champions potentially lining up a January offer.

Reports surfaced earlier this season claiming Zubimendi is more open on a transfer in 2025 and the midfielder did not reject the offer in his recent interview.

“I don’t believe in ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunities,” he noted. “If you are good and want to achieve something, it will come to you. There is no need to rush.”
