A man is recovering in hospital after bravely acting as a human shield for his 21-year-old girlfriend during a near-fatal carjacking in Washington, DC
The couple were sitting in their car in Northwest DC just after 8 p.m. on Monday when they said someone came up to them wearing a mask and demanded they give them the vehicle, affiliate FOX 5 reported.
When the couple tried to drive away, the suspect was spotted started shootinghitting them five times each, according to the report.

The woman’s family told FOX 5 that her boyfriend “shielded her with his body and took the brunt of the bullets,” suffering a punctured lung.
While the pair managed to escape armed suspectthey later crashed a quarter mile away.
A Good Samaritan called the family to tell them what had happened.

“At first I thought this couldn’t be happening,” a family member told FOX 5. “I asked if she could please get close so I could hear her voice to know everything was okay. Everyone should feel safe when they walk out the door, they don’t have to worry about someone taking their property or their lives.”
The woman undergo surgery and will likely require additional procedures, the report said.
DC police told Fox News Digital that no arrests have been made as of Wednesday evening and the status of the patients remains unchanged.
“There is no actionable lookout information at this time and the matter remains under investigation,” officials said.
