Maguire is hoping to extend his contract with Manchester United

Harry Maguire is optimistic about a possible extension to his stay at Manchester United after holding “positive” talks with the club.

Maguire’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the season, although United retain the option to extend it by a further year, keeping him at the club until 2026.

The England international was close to joining West Ham in 2023 but the transfer fell through.

Maguire has since found himself further down the defensive pecking order following the summer arrivals of Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro.

However, after a superb performance in United’s dramatic 2-1 derby win over Manchester City on Sunday, the 31-year-old remains optimistic about his future at Old Trafford.

“I haven’t really thought about (my long-term future),” Maguire said.

“I still have this year to go with a pick in their hands. But, yeah, all the signs are positive right now and the conversation I’m having is really positive.”

When asked if talks were ongoing about a long-term deal, Maguire simply replied: “Yes.”

The centre-back was a surprise starter in Ruben Amorim’s starting line-up for the game at the Etihad.

Maguire produced a solid defensive display, keeping Erling Haaland quiet as United scored twice late on to secure a dramatic win.

“It’s been a tough start to the season for us and not much for our fans to cheer about, so that’s for them,” Maguire added.

“I thought the game was a 50-50 game, to be honest. It could have gone either way. It’s an improvement but still a long way to go.”

The win marked an important result for Amorim, who has had mixed results since replacing Erik ten Hag as United manager.

“I think you can see we have a good structure, a good style of play, the way he wants us to work,” added Maguire.

“He is very good tactically. He has proven himself to be a winner.

“And, look, we’re still pretty young. I think he’s been here for about a month now, and we’re really looking forward to where we can go and where we can take this club. I’m sure he’ll take it in a positive way.”
