Lego display collapses into crowd during kid-friendly balloon drop on NYE

A New Year’s Eve celebration was cut short for families after a Lego display of balloons collapsed at a drop busy arcade in Massachusetts.

Peabody Police confirmed in a post on Facebook that several people were injured when a plastic Lego display fell from a mezzanine floor at the In the Game arcade in Peabody.

According to the arcade’s Facebook page, they hosted a “Noon Year’s Eve Celebration” on Tuesday afternoon.

Peabody Fire Chief John Dowling told Fox News Digital that they received a call just after noon about a partially collapsed ceiling in the arcade.

After Dowling arrived on the scene, crews discovered it was not a ceiling collapse, but rather an exhibit of Legos, which were 11 feet tall, that had fallen on a group of people during a botched New Year’s Eve balloon drop.

Dowling said the balloons had to be released from the display during the party and it appeared someone pulled the display too hard, causing it to fall over.

Dowling said 10 people suffered minor injuries. Eight were transported to hospital for treatment, while two refused medical transport.

Of the eight who sought treatment, Dowling said three were adults and five were children, who suffered mostly cuts and abrasions.

Lawren Turco, who attended the event with her family, told WBZ-TV that it was ‘pure chaos’.

“We watched the entire balloon descent and had no idea anything was happening until we were leaving immediately after the balloon descent,” Turco told WBZ-TV.

“There were big LEGO pieces everywhere, kids were crying, there were loads of people in the office, some with ice packs over their heads and people allowing their kids to steal the Lego pieces as souvenirs. It was pure chaos. I had no idea the true events until after the incident,” Turco continued.

The arcade was closed for a short time after the incident as a precaution, but reopened a short time later.

A spokesperson for the arcade told Fox News Digital that they are working with authorities as the situation is assessed.
