In an interview with E! News, Scott Patterson, who played the cranky but likable Luke on Gilmore Girls, explained why he thinks a spinoff won’t work.
“I brought this up to Peter Roth (Warner Bros) once, advocating for my own spinoff, and he said something steeped in the wisdom of TV history,” Patterson explained. “He said, ‘Scott, people are going to miss the other characters so much because the show is full of rich, wonderful characters.’
Patterson went on to say he appreciated Roth’s advice, noting: “And boy was that a smart thing to say because he nailed it.”
Lauren Grahamwho played Lorelai Gilmore on the hit show, then pitched the idea for a spinoff she thought might work.
“You can do a high school Lorelai,” she said, suggesting the plot goes back in time.
“We’re talking about it like it’s like The Hobbit or something, which I’m not sure it is,” Graham said. “But I think the way the other universes have handled this issue is just going backwards or forwards.”
Graham went on to elaborate on some predictable problems with creating this spinoff idea, saying, “Then you have the problem of having to cast the young Babette and the younger Miss Patty, so I don’t know.”
Gilmore Girls aired for seven seasons between 2000 and 2007. It follows the heartwarming adventures of Lorelai Gilmore and her daughter Rory (played by Alexis Bledel), living in the idyllic town of Stars Hollow.
In 2016 a miniseries called Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life was released on Netflix, featuring four episodes covering the four seasons.
In the interview, Graham explained that it would take a creative impulse to make another chapter in the Gilmore Girls universe.
“I think at this point it’s the same thing that brought us back together last time,” Graham said, “which is a creative step forward and that we’re going to give the fans what they want while honoring what we’ve already done.”
Most recently, Graham and Patterson’s characters reunited in a Walmart adwhich showed fans what their lives look like after Gilmore Girls.
The commercial showed Lorelai going to Luke’s place and asking for her “coffee coffee coffee.”
Luke pulls out a box from Walmart and Lorelai opens it to find a Keurig.
“I shouldn’t have!” she exclaims, to which he replies: “I had to, you’re driving me nuts.”
