Late Schar equalized denies league leaders in thriller

Liverpool came from behind twice against Newcastle before Fabian Sarr’s 90th-minute equalizer earned the hosts a point in a thrilling 3-3 draw at St James’ Park.

Mohamed Salah’s double looked like winning for the title-chasing Reds after Anthony Gordon put Newcastle back in front following goals from Alexander Isak and Curtis Jones either side of half-time.

But Fabian Schar struck in the 90th minute to earn the Toon a deserved point in an entertaining encounter on Tyneside.

The draw means Arne Slot’s men’s seven-game winning streak ends, with their lead at the top of the Premier League cut to seven points.

As it happened

The Magpies managed to keep the visitors at bay in a sharp opening and saw the first goal when Isak combined with Joelinton before opting to cross across goal rather than shoot as the Reds managed to clear.

This seemed to spark Liverpool into life as Alexis Mac Allister forced a good save from Nick Pope before yet another long drive hit the post.

It was then Newcastle’s turn to trouble the woodwork as Jacob Murphy was superbly placed on the right before his fine effort across goal hit the wrong side of Caoimhin Kelleher’s upright.

Bruno Guimaraes then calmly shot into the keeper’s hands before Cody Gakpo was denied by a block at the other end after stealing the ball in the box.

The Toon found the breakthrough they arguably deserved on 35 minutes after a clever turn from Guimaraes allowed the Brazilian to release Isak, who clipped Virgil van Dijk before slotting past Kelleher.

Liverpool looked out of sorts and Anthony Gordon could have easily doubled their lead moments later after being beaten by Isak, but the England winger couldn’t beat the Reds keeper with his finish, with Murphy then going close from a distance.

The slot had the reaction he would have been looking for at half-time as Mohamed Salah released Curtis Jones, with the midfielder’s effort slightly catching Nick Pope as he found the roof of the net.

Man of the moment Salah came alive after that as he set up another chance for Darwin Nunez moments later, but the Uruguayan was inches away from finding the touch.

But just when it looked as if Liverpool would assert their superiority, Gordon put the Toon back in front with a fine shot before sliding the ball home.

An eventful game continued as Pope had to be on hand to prevent Jones from getting a second, his close-range header cleared with a reflex save.

That goal finally came when a smart break saw substitute Trent Alexander-Arnold cut the ball back to Salah, who neatly found the bottom corner.

Once again though, Newcastle didn’t let that goal keep them down as they continued to test the leaders, with Murphy unable to divert the ball to the net after his break forced Kelleher out of his own goal.

Another good chance came against Liverpool as Nunes fired an effort wide from a promising position after Luis Diaz’s shot was blocked.

But just when it looked like Liverpool would get over the line, Sarr stepped up for the Toon as he latched on to a Guimaraes free-kick to find the net from a tight angle.
