Kylian Mbappe is a major doubt for the Intercontinental Cup final

Kylian Mbappe could miss the Intercontinental Cup final with the thigh injury he picked up in Real Madrid’s win at Atalanta on Tuesday.

The French striker opened the scoring in Bergamo with a superb finish, but was then sent off 10 minutes before half-time.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti indicated after the game that Mbappe’s withdrawal was merely a precautionary move.

He said: “It doesn’t look serious. It has an overload, a slight discomfort.

“We will have to see in the next few days. It doesn’t look serious, but he had to stop because he couldn’t sprint and it was bothering him a bit. So we preferred to change him.”

Further tests in the Spanish capital revealed an injury which local daily AS claims will take 10 days to heal.

The club’s statement read: “Following tests carried out on Kylian Mbappé today by the Real Madrid medical department, the player has been diagnosed with a thigh injury in his left leg. His progress will be monitored.”

That 10-day time frame will mean Mbappe will miss this weekend’s game against Rayo Vallecano and is a major doubt for the Intercontinental Cup final against either Mexican side Pachuca or Egypt’s Al Ahly on December 18.

It is another setback for Mbappe, who has struggled for form and fitness since joining Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.
