John Mayer shared an emotional post about losing sentimental items among the Los Angeles wildfires.
The 47-year-old musician posted an image of a folder via his Instagram on Thursday, Jan. 9, and reflected on how painful the loss of sentimental items and memorabilia can be — as thousands who have lost their homes face that harsh reality.
“This is the most valuable thing I own. This is a folder of photos of my father spanning his life as a baby, educator, husband and father. This is the only evidence of his life that will exist in time,” Mayer wrote in the post’s lengthy caption. “These are the ‘documents’ you read about people taking from their homes. When you hear someone say they lost everything in a fire, that’s almost everything, if not everything.
Mayer continued, “Those who say they’re going to get better still have their folders and albums. Those who are inconsolable have lost them. Just behind the immeasurable loss of life is the loss of the proof of life.”
The “Clarity” singer added that his thoughts are with those who have suffered this type of “devastating” loss in the fires.
“I don’t practice a prayer, but tonight I will say one for anyone who no longer has these items. It’s not about art and collectibles. It’s the photos, the letters, the class rings, the glasses and the things we keep to remind us that the ones we loved were here,” Meyer added. “May those who have lost so much find some semblance of hope and support from their family and friends.” Be safe, take care of yourselves and each other, and believe that humanity and all that it entails, though sometimes hard to see, is alive and well. It’s really devastating.”
After the publication, the musician confirmed that he did not lose his home in Los Angeles.
“To be clear: I’m safe, I’m extremely lucky to still have my place in LA, but I keep my papers close. ❤️,” he wrote in the comments.
The post seemed to resonate with his followers, with many taking to the comments section to agree with Mayer’s sentiment.
He was among them To Bob Saget a widow Kelly Rizzo, who revealed that she had collected sentimental items that once belonged to A full house star as he prepared to evacuate his home. (Saget died in January 2022 aged 65).
“This is so beautiful John. And so true. I can only imagine how precious everything in that folder is to you,” Rizzo, 45, wrote. “And when you said glasses, that just cracked me up because those are one of the first things I packed when I was getting ready to evacuate. Bob’s glasses, many of his clothes and personal effects that I know are completely irreplaceable. Thanks for putting this into perspective, something you’re great at…explaining the hard to explain.”
An estimated 9,000 homes were damaged or destroyed in the fires, officials said The Guardian. Since Tuesday, the fires have ravaged parts of the exclusive Pacific Palisades, Malibu, Santa Monica and Hollywood Hills areas. Celebrities included billy crystal, Milo Ventimiglia and Paris Hilton are among those who lost their homes due to the fires.
