I also truly believe that Will is one of the best comedic actors ever. So brilliant and so funny. So I was really nervous to be in it (because I was a fan). And I remember very clearly thinking, like, ‘Oh my God, they’re going to think I can’t act and I’m not funny.’

Hewitt appeared in the season 5 episode “And Then There Was Shawn,” which saw Friedl’s character, Eric Matthews, stay at school with brother Corey (Ben Savage), and friends Sean (Rider Strong), Jack (Matthew Lawrence), Topanga (Daniel Fishel) and Angela (Trina McGee). Things take a turn for the worse when students, teachers and even a janitor start being killed by a mysterious masked killer.

“I don’t remember it going this far. … It was really like, ‘Wow, this is embarrassing,’” Friedl recalled. “It’s been super intense and people have even said to me like, ‘Oh, when I was a kid, I didn’t know you guys were together.’ So it was just like what the hell is going on?” It’s the most intense makeover we’ve had in seven years of the show, it’s right there in the hallway. Then we kiss her neck while she tries to talk and all that, like we haven’t said each other’s names yet. This is intense.

Fishel echoed Friedel’s sentiments about the intensity of the scene, adding, “I don’t know how even, like, how none of us thought, ‘We know they’re a couple in real life, but does it still (make sense) as far as the show ?”

When discussing the awkward moment with the episode director Jeff McCrackenFriedl jokingly asked, “Whose idea was it about sexual assault?”

McCracken, for his part, joked that Friedl was “instrumental” in the PG-13 scene, before adding that Hewitt “couldn’t be better” and “fit in” with the rest of the cast .
