Newcastle had suffered a 2-0 defeat in Liverpool on February 26 in the Premier League. Asked about this game, Howe had admitted that he deliberately refused to show his cards in a competition in which his team was much less ambitious.
Howe finally turned out to have the perfect game, his most direct style and the energy of his side and pressing helping to stifle the most terrible attack on English football.
“Both teams were quite immediate and we treated this very well,” Howe added.
“No one wanted to make a mistake. He didn’t play very beautiful football, but we were effective in both boxes.
“We didn’t want to show our hand when we played them a few weeks ago. We still wanted to win this game we did in a different way.”
But Howe could not be drawn for his speech on his legacy and where Newcastle could go from here, with Magpies still on the Champions League hunt for the Premier League.
“I want to enjoy it first,” Howe said. “I’m always for tomorrow, but I’ll put the training books for a few days.”
