Greenland’s prime minister says the Arctic island does not want to be part of the US

Greenland’s prime minister has seemingly closed the door on newly elected President Donald Trump’s bid to acquire the autonomous Danish territory, saying Greenlanders do not want to be Americans or Danes.

“We want to be Greenlanders,” Múte Egede said in “Special Report” on Thursday. “We will always be part of NATO. We will always be a strong partner for the US. We are close neighbors. We have been recorded over the past 80 years. And I think we have a lot to work with in the future. But we also want to be clear: we don’t want to be Americans. We don’t want to be part of (the) US, but we want a strong partnership with (the) US together.”

At a news conference at Mar-a-Lago earlier this month, Trump said he would not rule out using military or economic pressure to acquire Greenland or the Panama Canal.

“We need them for economic security,” he told reporters. The incoming 47th president views the Arctic island as vital to US national security.

Fox News correspondent Alex Hogan traveled to Nuuk, Greenland, in mid-January to speak with some residents who seemed less than enthusiastic about Trump’s plans.

“I would rather be with Denmark and not with the US,” said a man whose name was withheld.

“The United States used to be a place for that was a bit admired here. And basically all the goodwill they used to have is now almost gone,” said another man.

A Greenlander, Jørgen Boassen, who has been a Trump supporter for years, explained that his home country is the “front door” for the United States as well as for foreign adversaries such as Russia and China.

Fox News anchor Bret Baier asked Egede whether Greenlanders would vote for independence from Denmark if given the chance.

‘Yes, but it is up to the Greenlandic people to decide when we want to be independent. And I think it is It’s important to think of that as Greenland If you take these steps, we will always be part of the Western alliance and a strong partner for the US, because your security is our security,” he replied.

The Prime Minister recognized Greenland’s vast and rare earth minerals, such as zinc, gold and uranium, and called for stronger partnerships with the United States and the European Union so the region can diversify its economy and attract investment.

“We have a lot to offer. We have a lot to work with. So we are ready for the US to be able to come here and make some investments in our minerals,” Egede added. He said no Chinese companies currently exist and operate in Greenland.
