Goals, highlights ‘over the moon’ Vardy helps Leicester beat West Ham, Palace win at Ipswich

Four games were played in the bottom half of the Premier League table on Tuesday when Ipswich Town hosted Crystal Palace and West Ham hosted Leicester City.

The Foxes were competing for the first time under new manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, a former Premier League goalscorer with Manchester United who had an interim role at Old Trafford last month.

Ipswich started the night in third place and on a run of two home draws, level on points with Leicester and 17th-placed Palace immediately above them.

Leicester vs West Ham: Rudd has woken up

Van Nistelrooy’s tenure at Leicester got off to a flying start when Jamie Vardy scored the opener against West Ham after two minutes at the King Power Stadium.

Vardy pounced on Bilal El Khannouss’ low pass beyond the visitors’ defense on the left, entered the penalty area and into the far corner of the net, with the goal ruled out after video review by the assistant referee.

West Ham had 20 shots during the first half and had a goal disallowed after the break, but fell behind 2-0 when El Hannoush curled a precise low finish past Lukasz Fabianski from Casey McAteer’s pass.

Patson Daka smashed in Leicester’s third in the 90th minute to ensure Niclas Fullkrug’s reply from Crysencio Summerville’s corner was of no consequence as Van Nistelrooy’s reign began in style.

“This was just the beginning,” Vardy told Amazon Prime Video Sport, describing himself as “over the moon”. “We had a whole day as a full team together (with Van Nistelrooy) working on things.

“You could see some of the things were working and some were a bit rusty… (we will now have) more time on the training ground with the new manager to get his ideas across.

“We know what qualities (El Kanoush) has – he does it every day in training. His first goal will be the first of many.

“You can hear (the fans) all singing here and joining in the celebrations afterwards. We’re just going to make sure we kneel now.”

The win moved Leicester four points clear of the relegation zone, while the Hammers suffered their second successive defeat and third defeat in five games.

Ipswich vs Palace: Mateta makes the difference

Palace took advantage of their opponents’ poor form to climb three points from the bottom three and leave The Tractor Boys in second place after 14 games.

Jean-Philippe Mateta’s first away goal of the season decided the encounter, setting up a superb move and clinical finish for the 59th-minute winner.

Striker Mateta should have doubled Palace’s lead but was denied by Aro Muric’s impressive save, while Ipswich hit the post late on from Jacob Greaves’ header.

“It wasn’t about the outstanding performance,” Eagles manager Oliver Glasner told BBC Match of the Day. “We expected a big fight and it was a big fight.

“It was an amazing goal, an amazing finish. We had two or three chances to take the game away from them and we didn’t take them. In the end we had to be a bit lucky, but we deserved the win.

“When JP gets the ball in the box, he’s such a good finisher and it’s usually a goal. We are happy with our defensive performance. We didn’t give them a chance from open play, only one from a set piece in the first half and one in the second half.”

Palace have now lost one of their last seven games in all competitions, while Ipswich are still chasing a second league win of the season.
