“When the danger struck, HPD sergeant Joe Sanchez did not hesitate,” the department wrote in a statement about X.

“While attending a band competition at a Pasadena school, Sgt. Sanchez was one of those who quickly performed to protect lives. This month he marks 33 years at HPD. We are grateful for his service.”

The school district said that Brandl was not affiliated with the band competition and that it was currently investigating why he was on campus.

The police said that Brandl claimed that he was being chased by someone and that he was afraid that he and his wife would be killed.

He is currently being held without bond.
