Former WAPO editor claims that the public must be ‘grateful’ for the press


Former Washington Post editor -in -chief Marty Baron Said that people must be “grateful” for the press for their hard work “to keep Trump responsible.”

Baron discussed the owner of the newspaper, Jeff Bezos, and his recent Changes in the opinion pageAnnouncing that it would support “personal liberties and free markets” and do not publish positions that oppose those pillars.

Said baron Mediaite’s Podcast “Press Club” Monday that he was “very disturbed” and “shocked” by that decision.

“It is not something I expected because my impression was that Bezos had always argued for different opinions about the opinion pages – that they should reflect the reach of opinions in the country,” Baron said. “There is always a discussion about policy, and a news organization such as the Washington Post has a tradition of wearing a wide range of opinions. It should ensure that it continues. So I was amazed by this and deeply disturbed.”

Despite his criticism, Baron argued against the cancellation of Subscriptions by Washington Post and said that he was still “delighted” by the news that it publishes and hopes that it will be recognized for his “revealing report” on President Donald Trump.

“The post actually does the work, keeps Trump responsible, people tells what happens in their government, despite all these things on the opinion pages,” Baron said. “I have been gone for four years, but I know the staff and it is a great staff. They are honorable people. They work very hard to collect the information. It’s a shame that they are the victim of everything that happens around them.”

He continued: “I wish Bezos and (CEO of Washington Post) Lewis publicly thank them for the work they do, because that is exactly why we have a free press in this country and why we need a free press. It would be nice if, instead of having so much disturbance, they must be public to do the work for their hard work and the public.”

Baron also urged points of sale to ignore claims from people like Trump that Legacy Media is dead, claim that Trump himself is “incredibly obsessed” by traditional media.

“But I will say this about the press: Trump continues to claim that we are not relevant and his people claim that we are not relevant. Elon Musk claims that we are not relevant. But the truth is that we are not irrelevant. The biggest proof of that is so obsessed.

“In fact, that is all they seem to be able to talk about. Trump is incredibly obsessed with the traditional press. So how can you both claim that we are not relevant and at the same time talk about us? It makes no sense.”

“I think this is a serious mistake, and it has caused enormous damage to the Washington Post brand … I am worried about the damage it does to the brand and reputation to the post and that people today may have larger suspicions …”, said Baron on Boston Public Radio.
