Fenerbahce held on while Roma and Ajax suffered shock defeats

After the drama of the return of the Champions League this week, it’s now the Europa League’s turn to provide some midweek action.

There were 16 games on Thursday, with Besiktas beating Athletic Club 4-1 in the warm-up on Wednesday afternoon.

The two English clubs were in action, with Manchester United hosting Rangers and Tottenham traveling to Hoffenheim.

Ruben Amorim’s Red Devils scored a late winner to beat Rangers, meanwhile, Ange Postecoglou’s Lilywhites almost threw away a comfortable lead in Germany but managed to hold on for three big points.

Elsewhere, Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce faced Lyon but failed to get past their French rivals, drawing 0-0 at home.

Portuguese side Porto hosted Olympiakos but went down, losing 1-0 thanks to Ayoub El Kaabi’s 79th-minute goal.

Roma headed to AZ Alkmaar and like many others were on the receiving end of a shock. The Italians lost 1-0 thanks to ex-Tottenham player Troy Parrott scoring the only goal of the game.

Lazio clashed with Real Sociedad in a terrific affair. The home side ran out 3-1 winners and Sociedad had Aichen Munoz sent off in the first half, making it difficult to overturn from that point on.

And Ajax were on the receiving end of a shocker, losing 1-0 away to RFS.

That wasn’t the end of the action, with dozens more goals flying across the pitches in an outstanding night of European football.
