Jan Vertonghen – one of Belgium’s most distinguished players – announced that he will retire from professional football at the end of the current season.
The 37 -year -old defender, who had a remarkable career extending in almost two decades and played his best years in Tottenham will soon close his boots.
Reflecting his decision, Vertonghen shared his thoughts on leaving the game.
He said: “In the last few weeks it has become clear that these will be my last games. This is not an easy decision at all. But it is the right one.
“I have noticed that it is getting harder and more difficult to prepare for natural meetings and races and to show myself as the player I want to be.
“Not only to my fans and colleagues, but also to myself. So I’ll stop after this season.”

Vertonghen’s career was nothing less than excellent. He started his business trip with Ajax, making 220 appearances for Dutch giants.
His talent and leadership took him to the Premier League, where he spent eight successful years at Tottenham Hotspur, gathering 315 matches.
A two -seasons period with the Portuguese Club Benfica followed before returning to Belgium in 2022 to join Anderlecht. Since then, he has worn the captain’s armband for nearly three seasons, playing 77 matches.
In addition to the club’s football, Vertonghen’s impact on the Belgian national team was historic. With 157 covers in his name, he holds the record as a Belgian player. His contributions have helped to shape the past, present and future of Red Devils.
As his career approaches its end at the end of May, Vertonghen remains committed to giving all his final extent to the season.
He added: “I’ll give it all about my latest eleven games and I hope to experience some more great moments with my fans and teammates.
“I am very proud of what I have managed to experience and for what I have achieved. I would also like to thank all those who have supported me all these years from the bottom of my heart.”
