More than a decade after the release of the hit film, a Happy Gilmore the sequel is finally in the works.
Netflix announced in May 2024 that there will be a Happy Gilmore 2with Adam Sandler repeats his role.
The cult classic, released in 1996, follows the story of a failed ice hockey player (Sandler) who discovers a talent for golf and competes in a golf tournament to save his grandmother’s home from foreclosure. Along with Sandler, the sports comedy also stars Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, Francis Bay, Carl Weathers, Alan Covert, Kevin Nealon, Peter Kellamis, Richard Keel, Dennis Duggan, Joe Flaherty, Jared Van Snellenberg, Robert Smigle, Will Sasso, Lee Trevino, Bob Barker, Vern Lundquist, Mark Lai, David Kay, Ian Boothby, Alice Dinion and Ben Stiller.
In March 2024 MacDonald, who played Sandler’s nemesis Shooter McGavin in the film, previously said that Happy Gilmore 2 was under development.
“Here’s a quick tidbit. I saw Adam about two weeks ago and he said “McDonald. You’re going to love this,” he shared in an interview with Cleveland’s 92.3 The Fan at the time. “I said, ‘What?’ And he goes, ‘How about this? And he shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2.”

At the end of the 1996 film, Happy Gilmore (Sandler) uses a trick to win the Tour championship and the golden jacket, eventually winning back her grandmother’s house.
Who will star in ‘Happy Gilmore 2’?
When the sequel was confirmed in May 2024, Netflix shared that Sandler was expected to reprise his role. Three months later, Sandler confirmed the news and shared this Travis Kelce would be too joining him in the film.
“The whole thing was hanging out with Travis. That’s why we put it together,” Sandler said of the film in an August 2024 episode. on Kelce’s “New Heights” podcast. “We’re going there (to New Jersey). Travis, by the way, thank you, I heard you talking about (Happy Gilmore 2) on your show guys.”
The comedian teased that he had a special role in mind for the NFL star, but they ultimately decided not to go that route.
“We talked about you playing my son while we were writing it, literally six months ago,” Sandler continued. “We were like, imagine if Travis was my first baby, how funny that would be. Just a badass.”
That same month, Netflix announced that Julie Bowen and Christopher McDonald are ready to return for the sequel. “Shooter McGavin and Virginia Venit, please report green,” Netflix wrote via X while announcing the news. Minutes later, the streaming service revealed The bad bunny will also join the cast.
In December 2024 Sandler also confirmed the rapper Eminem made a “fiendishly funny” cameo in the film while appearing in The Dan Patrick Show.
“Eminem was cool. He came, he was great,” the actor said at the time, but did not say what role the rapper plays in the film. “I’ve known Eminem for a long time, he’s a great guy and he came in and was hilarious as hell. I think we were just one day with Eminem and he was just shooting and shooting and he was crazy. He said a million things that we can use and a million that we’re glad we have on record.
What will be the plot of “Happy Gilmore 2”?
While Netflix has yet to reveal details about what the sequel’s plot will be, Sandler said he is already working on the script.

“We had been playing and (writing),” he shared “The Dan Patrick Show” in April 2024 “We’ve got a million ideas already, we just have to make it a movie and make sure we’re excited about it and people are going to love it.” We love Happy Gilmore. We don’t want to let anyone down.”
