Everton have sacked the manager less than three weeks after the Friedkin Group takeover

Everton have sacked manager Sean Dyche after less than two years in charge after a five-game winless run left the Toffees one point above the Premier League relegation zone.

Backroom staff Ian Woan, Steve Stone, Mark Howard and Billy Mercer have left alongside Dyche in the first major decision made by the Friedkin Group since taking over the club on 19 December.

Under-18s head coach Leighton Baines and captain Seamus Coleman took over on an interim basis.

Former manager of Watford and Burnley Dyche he was appointed in January 2023 and sparked a tumultuous period at Everton, starting with the club’s elimination from relegation on the final day of the 2022/23 season.

Everton were deducted a total of eight points for breaching the Premier League’s financial rules last season but finished 14 points above the relegation zone.

Dyche had repeatedly refused to address whether he expected to be in charge of Everton’s move to the new 52,888-capacity ground at Bramley-Moor Dock next season.

Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth left them with three wins in their opening 19 league games, with only Southampton winning fewer matches.

The Saints are also the only side with fewer goals than Everton’s 15 in this season’s top flight, who are five behind the next-lowest scorers Ipswich Town.

The Friedkin Group fired Dietz

Speaking on December 20, Dyche said new Toffees executive chairman Marc Watts has his “full support” after a “very casual” meeting at the club’s training ground.

Watts, who was appointed following the completion of the purchase of the club by Farhad Moshiri, met with Dyche and women’s team manager Brian Sorensen, as well as a meeting with the rest of the staff.

“Apart from winning games – which all managers have to do – they’ve made it clear they’ve got nothing but support for me,” Dyche said.

“It was about the format going forward. They fully support me, the staff and the team moving forward… nothing but support and no second thoughts about anything else.

“I haven’t said much about what I want. They asked me questions about what I learned in my time and the overall feel of the club.”
