The most important culprit is the outbreak of the very pathogenic Aviaire Influenza (HPAI), she said.

There are no treatments or vaccinations for bird flu, Metz said, and entire herds are agreed once it is detected.

“In the US we lost almost 50 million laying hens to bird flu in the past year – and more than 14 million birds in just the last four weeks,” she said.

The production of eggs, Metz said, is ‘both complex and time -sensitive’.

“Although we cannot predict the future, we now know that our system is tense and hpai remains a clear risk for poultry-kugs,” she said.

“It will take a long period without extra HPAI detections on egg farms to stabilize the offer.”

“We expect shortages to be located and short -lived.”

“The good news is that egg farmers have a lot of experience to work together to move eggs throughout the country to where they are most needed – and that’s exactly what they are doing now,” she said.
