Supporter Eddie Hearn says he would be interested in David Morrell to compete with Callum Smith then for the WBO temporary lightweight heavyweight title. Morrell’s administration will have to pay the requested price.
The way Hearn speaks, is of no interest in leaving Morrell anywhere near Smith, especially with him turning his career with a victory over Joshua Buatsi last month. No one expected that Smith would win this fight. Hearn must admit that he does not want Morrell to destroy things by hitting Callum.
The price of Morrell
In addition to money, Hearn sees no value in Callum Smith (31-2, 22 kos) who is competing with the recent beating of former WBA ‘175-LB Morrell champion (11-1, 9 kos). It is not clear what kind of money Hearn would expect from the Cuban Morrell administration to fight Smith for the WBO intermediate zone.
Hearn points out that Smith, 34, is the WBO mandatory for the undisputed lightweight heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol. So all the callums have to do is sit down and wait. Eventually, he will get a world title shooting against Bivol or anyone who holds the WBO title.
Morrell lost his last match to David Benavidez from a 12-stroke unanimous decision on February 1st. Benavidez proved to be very specialist for Morrell, who made many criticism of his battle strategy. With Morrell’s power and sport, he had the tools to win the race, but did not use the right approach.
It is doubtful that Smith could get the punishment Morrell faced Benavidez without folding. It beats harder than Artur Beterbiev, and we saw what he did to call.
