Dem Rep. Nadler steps down from the top position on the Judiciary Committee and endorses Raskin


Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., has withdrawn from the race to become a high profile member House Committee on Justiceaccording to a letter from Dear Colleague that he sent on Wednesday.

Nadler’s decision opens the way for Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., to take over as the top Democrat on the committee. Raskin had launched an effort to challenge Nadler.

“As our country faces the return of Donald Trump and the renewed threats to our democracy and our way of life that he represents, I am confident that Jamie will capably lead the Judiciary Committee as we tackle this growing threat. to cope,” Nadler wrote. endorsing Raskin to succeed him.

Rep. Raúl Grijalva, D-Ariz., withdrew from the race for the Democratic top spot on the Natural Resources Committee earlier this week after Rep. Jared Huffman, D-Calif., had announced his bid. A handful of lawmakers are also challenging Agriculture Committee Rep. David Scott, D-Ga., for his position, Politico reported.

Nadlers` did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Raskin thanked Nadler for his support in a post on X.

“Jerry Nadler is an extraordinary attorney, patriot and public servant. His tenacious defense of civil rights and civil liberties is a great inspiration to our people. I am honored and humbled to have his support in the battle ahead,” the Maryland Democrat wrote.

His likely elevation to the Judiciary Committee creates an opening for the position of senior member of the House Oversight Committee. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., has expressed interest in that role, among others.

“I have a lot of conversations with my colleagues,” Ocasio-Cortez told reporters on Wednesday. “It is incredibly important that we fully prepare for a coming Trump administration and fight for Americans who work every day.”
