Chelsea is flying high

of Chelsea Enzo Maresca has essentially been working with two different XIs at Stamford Bridge in the early parts of the season, but the odd set-up has proved successful so far. The former Leicester City player has one Premier League The XI, which is made up of his favorite players, while those he believes are not up to scratch are part of a completely different UEFA Conference League squad, with very little overlap between the two.

The positives of such a system were on full display against Aston Villa, where Chelsea looked fresher than their opponents and outplayed Unai Emery’s out-of-form side on their way to a 3-0 win and all three points.

Both had European commitments in midweek, but Villa was unable to make the rotation against Juventus, while Chelsea’s starting line-up was rested on Thursday night instead.

It remains to be seen whether the situation will pay off in the long term, with question marks over what might happen if they reach the final stages of the Conference League or Champions League next season, where Maresca will want his strongest side on display.

It has already led to murmurs of discontent, me Christopher Nkunku is reportedly unhappy with his role in the ‘B’ team at Stamford Bridge. And now, another member could retire in January.
