Canada bans additional assault weapons and proposes donating to Ukraine

Canada on Thursday announced a ban on 324 assault-style firearms, in an ongoing effort for stricter gun control.

Leaders in Canada also said they are working with the government of Ukraine to see how the weapons can be donated to support the fight against The invasion of Russia of Ukraine.

“Every bit of help we can provide to the Ukrainians is a step towards their victory,” Defense Secretary Bill Blair said.

The latest restriction, announced by Public Safety Secretary Dominic LeBlanc, also includes investments in border security in an effort to stop smuggling and trafficking, as well as strengthening gun controls and tougher penalties for gun dealers.

The strengthening of gun control laws in Canada came after the May 2020 ban on 1,500 makes and models of firearms. Last month that number grew to more than 2,000 as new models were identified.

“Firearms designed for the battlefield clearly have no place in our communities,” said Dominic LeBlanc, Secretary of Public Safety, Democratic Institutions and Intergovernmental Affairs. “Too often, these types of weapons are used to commit some of these crimes Canada’s worst atrocities ever witnessed.”
