Gov. Gavin Newsom was called in for lack of responsibility on Sunday as wildfires continue to devastate Los Angeles, California. Critics said California’s governor denied responsibility after multiple media appearances during the crisis.
“I mean, you’re the governor of California. It might as well be the mayor of California. We’re all in this together. We’re all better off when we’re all better off,” he said when pressed by NBC. about whether the “buck stops” with him.
Newsom spoke to NBC News in an interview of about 20 minutes about the proceedings wildfires throughout Los Angeles. The interview aired Sunday during NBC’s “Meet the Press.” The Governor of California was also mocked for his interview with Pod Save America, hosted by several former Obama staffers, as Los Angeles tackles the fires.
Critics said Newsom was given “layup after layup” during the interview, accusing him of dodging responsibility. Another user said California’s governor gave a “complicated response.”

Former California Sen. Melissa Melendez blasted Newsom, saying he accepted “zero responsibility.”

The governor also took to social media on Saturday to counter some of the issues stories about the fire.

During his appearance on Pod Save America, Newsom defended his decision to investigate the “loss of water pressure to local fire hydrants” and the “unavailability of water supplies from the Santa Ynez Reservoir.”
“Let’s just get the facts straight and get them out quickly,” he said during the podcast. ‘Let’s stop pointing. Let’s just judge the truth. I don’t care who’s to blame. I want to know what happened.’

A spokesperson for Newsom defended the governor’s decision to appear on the podcast a statement to the Daily Beast.
“The Governor is solely focused on the response and distributing critical updates and resources to where Californians get their news – it’s 2025, with one of the largest podcasts in the country, with hosts who call the stricken LA area home,” wrote Brandon Richards , a spokesman for the governor,” the spokesperson said.
