Biden designates 2 national monuments in California

President Biden signed proclamations Tuesday during his final week in office to establish Chuckwalla National Monument and Sáttítla Highlands National Monument, which will protect hundreds of thousands of acres of California land.

The event was postponed for a week due to the devastating consequences wildfires rage in Southern California, and Biden revealed that he had wanted to do the ceremony in the state, but it had to be moved to the White House.

“We have implemented the most aggressive climate agenda ever in the history of the world,” the president said in the East Room of the White House before discussing national monuments. “Our natural wonders are the heart and soul of our nation.”

He said that in his second week as president, he signed an executive order “establishing the first-ever conservation goal to protect 30% of all our lands and waters across America by 2030…I call this national campaign America the Beautiful…And the past four years we delivered…putting America on track to achieve that audacious goal, restoring it, creating new national monuments, conserving hundreds of millions of acres of land and waters across America, from New England to Minnesota, Texas to Colorado, Arizona, Alaska.”
