Below deck downis Captain Jason Chambers opens up about a recent health scare.

In a video shared via Instagram on Monday, December 16, the reality star revealed that a recent biopsy he underwent confirmed it was melanoma, a type of skin cancer.

“I’m in Australia and this was done in Bali,” Captain Jason, 52, explained in the video. “The Australian doctors here, they weren’t happy with what the indications told them to go to stage 2, which would have been to cut out a larger area and test the glands. So I am waiting for the specimen to come from Bali so it will be here this week but I may not get it until after Christmas.

The Aussie star encouraged her countrymen to be extra cautious as the weather gets hotter over the next few months.

“Two out of three people suffer from melanoma. This is a big thing. We’re going to have a heat wave this summer, so don’t forget to wear a hat,” he said, noting that he never used sunscreen but has now found chemical-free products. “Make sure you put some sunscreen on, get some shade and cover up.”

In the caption of his post, Captain Jason added: “For someone who has spent his life in the sun, as a kid working out in the ocean, I thought I was immune to the harmful effects of the sun. I love the sun and its health benefits are obvious, but be wise and like everything in life, it’s all about balance, pick your battles.”

“With a melanoma biopsy diagnosed, I now have an anxious wait and what I thought was a blemish on my skin has changed in just 6 months, early detection is the key,” he continued.

The post concludes: “So find a chemical-free sunscreen, grab some shade with a hat, and enjoy the sun with protection.”

Captain Jason was in charge of Below deck downwhich aired on the Peacock, for two seasons. A third season has already been filmed.

“Season 3 has been filmed. I just know it’s in editing right now, but it’s been shot and I can confirm it,” Jason exclusively speaking Us Weekly in September. “Most information so far is that it has been confirmed.”

Season 2 of Below deck downaired in 2023, made headlines when ship boatswain Luke Jones was filmed lying naked with the flight attendant Margot Sissonwho at the time had passed out after the crew’s boozy evening. After a cameraman intervened, the producers had Luke leave the boat and he was moved to a hotel for the night. Jason ended up terminating Luke and leaving the flight attendant Laura Bileskalin went after she blamed Margot for leaving him.

The captain said us that the scandal surrounding season 2 led to some big changes implemented during the filming of the new season.

“There have certainly been changes. I know the policies and procedures were in place in previous seasons even when this happened. When production stepped in and stopped it, it showed that these policies and procedures were very much understood,” Jason noted. “Now for the next season, the policies and procedures are not only controlled by the production team itself. They actually brought in extra HR people to make sure the black and white text was understood by everyone.”
