Bellingham goal helps hosts set up Spanish Super Cup final against Barcelona

Jude Bellingham scored his ninth goal in 11 games in all competitions as Real Madrid beat Mallorca 3-0 at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah to set up a Spanish Super Cup final against Barcelona.

England striker Bellingham put the hosts ahead in the 63rd minute after Rodrygo headed onto the post and Kylian Mbappe’s shot was saved by goalkeeper Dominik Greif as part of a counter-attack.

Opposing defender Martin Valien turned in Brahim Diaz’s pass for Madrid’s second in the 92nd minute, with Rodrigo getting on the scoresheet three minutes later from Lucas Vazquez’s cross.

Both teams were involved in a major clash on the pitch after the final whistle in an incident that appeared to be sparked by a dispute between Mallorca’s Pablo Maffeo and Madrid’s Vinicius Junior.

The reigning Spanish and European champions meet domestic rivals Barca at the same stadium on Sunday (7pm GMT).

Madrid vs Mallorca

Madrid had all 11 of the efforts on target between the teams but were hampered by a lack of accuracy, with Mbappe now without a goal in more than three-and-a-half hours of football.

Despite having 35% of the possession and far fewer chances, Mallorca arguably had the best chance before falling behind when Cyle Larin turned away a superb opener from Dani Rodriguez’s cross in the first half.

Aurelien Tchouameni’s situation may be of more concern to Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti. The midfielder was playing a leading role until he went down while defending a cross against Larin five minutes after the restart, colliding with the striker and leaving the action with concussion.

Greif made late saves from strikes from Rodrygo and Mbappe, although the sixth-placed side in Spain were not unduly concerned until the hapless Valjent stabbed Brahim Diaz’s impressive pass past Greif.

Mbappe would almost certainly have got to the ball and scored if Valjent hadn’t stretched to intervene, and Mallorca could have had few complaints after creating precious little for much of the game.

Spanish Super Cup Final: Madrid – Barcelona

Rodrigo’s goal heralded a strange scene after the conclusion, with Ancelotti among the ostensible peacemakers after a hotly contested game that ended acrimoniously.

The Madrid side, five points clear of third-placed Barca at the top of La Liga, will now seek revenge in the final against the side who beat them 4-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu on November 16.

They won the game 4-1 in last season’s final, including a first-half hat-trick from Vinicius Jr.
